KADIO SIGALAS
(1882 – 1967)

KADIO Sigalas was born into the Nomikos shipping and seafaring family on the island of Santorini at a time when women were not expected to pursue careers in business. As convention demanded, at the age of 15 she married a captain, George Sigalas. She had numerous children, of which seven survived to grow up. While her husband was away at sea, she not only brought up her family and managed the household, she also prudently managed his money so that loans could be paid off and he could afford to buy ships. By the time she was 40 years old Kadio traveled to Piraeus to establish the company office. Even though she had never completed school, she met the most powerful businessmen and bankers as an equal.

Captain Sigalas continued to travel with the company vessels, secure knowing that Kadio was managing the business from Piraeus, helped by her sons. Her husband died just after the Second World War, but Kadio continued for another 20 years. She was dedicated to shipping and never wanted to retire. Her reputation was such that, according to one story, Aristotle Onassis complimented her as being his 'favourite' among other shipowners.
