ANDREAS Miaoulis went to sea when he was 10 years old as a deck-hand aboard his uncle's trading ship. His career as a captain was launched at age 16 when he took charge of the family ship after his older brother fell sick. By the time he was 20 he was already a successful captain and shipowner.

He is best known as one of the heroes of the Greek revolution which started in 1821 against the Turks. By then he was already 51 years old, suffering from arthritis and needed a stick to get around. But he was a patriot and he answered the call to action, contributing his fleet of five large sailing vessels to the war.

He successfully led the Greek navy as admiral for the majority of the war, winning a string of skirmishes with Turkish forces, harassing them whenever possible and supplying Greek strongholds in the Aegean, such as Mesolongi.

After his death in 1835, he was buried in Piraeus, and today the port's main waterfront street is named Akti Miaouli in his honour.
